Introduction

I am the owner of the Chord Hugo 2 DAC/Amp for headphones. While this device has quite engaging sound and to some it can be quite addictive, it seems to me that it also has some serious engineering design flaw, that can severely damage your hearing.

How? Very easily! As far as I understand, the device was built to drive any headphones – with almost no limitations. Because of that it has a very powerful headphones output, so it can drive voltage-hungry/high-impedance headphones, up to 600 ohms. I had a natural ability to mimick my teacher’s musical style and phrasing without any serious effort. It was a gift I received when I was born.

I also had the ability to hear extremly silent sounds in complete silence, like sounds of steps of a fluffy cat walking at night. My brain presented silent sounds to me loudly and also passed through temporary, very loud but short sounds (booms) without changing the “master volume”. I had a sort of “extended dynamic range,” which is now lost due to the trauma. Everything has become quieter: my footsteps, the sound of water, the sound of typing. However, I get adapted and started to compare less. It also seems that my brain decreased the overall “gain” to a enough-for-living level. My setup with Chord Hugo 2

For more than 20 years I have been bying and using different kinds of Hi-Fi devices starting back in the fall/winter 2005, when I bought my Sennheisers HD 595 – I still use them today. Over the years, I (and my father) have owned several other models: Sennheiser HD 598, HD 560s (which I plan to sell), HD 599 (which I returned to Amazon), HD 650 (which I still have, but they are broken), and HD 800 (have but going to sell). Also have three different over-ear ANC headphones. Overall, I do not like in-ear headphones or earbuds. My first dedicated headphone amplifier was the Lehmannaudio Black Cube Linear (BCL) USB.

Approximately for the last 6 months I have been constantly listening to HD 595 connected directly to my Chord Hugo 2. To some this combination might seem strange, but to my ears it was great. My hearing used to have a strong response to high frequences, even beyound 12 kHz, making many other headphones too sharp for me. The HD 595 gave me enough amount of high frequences. Plus I love vocals and HD 595 delivers them in emotional way. The other combination I liked and used for a long time was X-Fi Elite Pro + Lehmannaudio BCL + HD 650. It was a more sharp combination, but still very emotional and engaging.

I am the original owner of my Chord Hugo 2. It has never been opened and from the first look it is still works like normal. Also, I have never updated its firmware. Actually, it is not publicly availble, and I don’t even know if it exists. Although it is a portable device, I used it strictly indoors and always kept it connected to the power supply in “desktop mode.” There was also a period when I didn’t use it at all, and it simply sat on a shelf.

In both cases, no specific drivers were used, as Chord does not provide them for Linux — it simply works as a “plug-and-play” device. As I already mentioned, I used it and desktop mode, thus I don’t disconnect it from my laptop of from power adapter.

The device was connected to the laptop via a USB, directly to the laptop port – not through some hub or adapter. It is important to note that you cannot change the device’s volume from within Kubuntu; the only thing the OS can do is mute the output. To adjust the volume, you must physically rotate the volume knob on the device itself.

Because my hearing was sensitive to quiet sounds and my headphones didn’t require much power, I usually kept the Hugo at the 2nd to 4th volume step from zero. To be honest, I don’t want to check the exact level right now — I’ve developed a fear of the device and have no desire to use it at the moment. First incident

The first incident occurred during the second half of 2025. I was sitting at my computer doing something and listening to music, when the volume began to ramp up without any input from me. It wasn’t instantaneous; I believe it would took about 3 to 4 seconds to go from minimum to maximum (from the red light to the white light indicator). It’s hard to be precise, but I believe it was closer to 3 seconds.

The device was sitting on the table slightly to the right of my 27-inch desktop monitor. When the volume started to increase, I looked over and saw the color of the volume knob changing. Then, as far as I remember, I instictively touched the knob with my finger, or did a single rotation (may be more than one step/postion) to decrease the volume, and the ramping stopped. At that moment, the indicator was blue, the sound was very loud but not yet at a level that could cause immediate injury (or so it seemed in my case). Most probably I removed the heaphones immediately after.

This one I remember in much greater detail. It was the late evening of January 8th, 2026. I was watching and/or listening something at my computer, and decided to go to the bathroom to get ready for bed. I usually do this a bit earlier so that once the water wakes me up and then the sleepiness returns, I can go straight to sleep.

I have spent in the bathroom about 10 mins. Before going in there the Hugo was already working for some time, don’t remember how many hours. I left it at my usual volume level, very low – simply took the heaphones off my head and that was it. Actually, I almost don’t use PC speaker, so I don’t disturb neighbours in other apartments even during a day (walls are not thick enough). When I returned from the bathroom, I guess the Hugo had already maxed out its volume, based on the the first incident. I’m certain it didn’t happen instantly, after I back. Anyway, I didn’t know that the volume is maxed out after I returned from the bathroom. I didn’t look at the volume indicator because I had no reason to expect it to change on its own. To be clear: I was alone, and my PC had not gone to sleep, as it is set to a one-hour standby interval.

So, I put my headphones back, and pressed play. I don’t remember exactly what it was. Most probably it was not music, but some video. At that moment, my chest tightened, I was not able to understand what is going on, literally lost ability to think – that loud it was. I was not even able to realize that I need to turn the volume down. While the headphones were on my head and that deafening sound was blasting into my ears, my brain simply stopped functioning. It was torture. However, somehow I was able, I believe something like in 3 seconds, to knock the headphones together with my glasses off my head, by hitting them from behind by my hands.

It was then that I noticed the volume indicator was white. I began decreasing the volume manually, which is quite a clumsy process. The volume knob is designed in a way that it requires multiple turns to make a significant change; you cannot do it in one or even one-and-a-half rotations.

I had a low-pitched ringing in my ears that started to fade and disappeared after about 10 seconds. Since I was in deep shock, I don’t remember exactly what I did next; I’d rather not say anything than make things up. Soon after, I went to bed. I had no blood coming from my ears (at least none that I noticed), and there were no any noises. So I slept okay.

Short Treatment Time Line

09.01.2026 (Friday) - 11.01.2026 (Sunday)

Unfortunately, I didn’t go to a doctor immediately. I had a whole Friday to do so, but…

When I woke up the first day after the trauma, I realised that I couldn’t hear properly: everything was muffled and quiet. Everything was significantly quieter. At first, I estimated the volume had dropped by half, but later it felt more like a 20% to 30% loss.

However, there was no blood, no pain, no noise, no ringing – no anything. It was “just” a bad hearing.

I performed a self-diagnosis and concluded it was likely a Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS). As it turns out, I was partly right. Below is my own understanding of what happened to me. This is not medical advice; it’s just my personal model for understanding the situation, and I could be wrong.

When you break something, e.g. an arm, you feel the pain but it isn’t always overwhelming at first. The brain blocks the pain, temporarily, and, in case of the arm, you will have much higher intensity in 5 - 10 mins (Had such experience. Seems to me that I was even able to instinctively put the broken bone into required position while I was in a shock. I heard the related sound).

Something similar happened with my ears. Most probably my brain, due to the shock, cut the signal from most of the hair cells (the ones which react to sound) in my inner ears. This is how I understood Temporary Threshold Shift. TTS, if it is TTS, passes in 2 - 3 days according to Internet, meaning during that period you will not hear the sound from the damaged or destroyed cells. You have the damage, but you don’t fully realize the extent of it yet because the brain isn’t notifying you. All you know is that you can’t hear well.

I thought, that as soon as TTS passed, I would start to hear properly, like before. I thought that TTS itself is like a disease, which passes in 2 - 3 days. Instead, as you probably already guessed, once those 2 or 3 days passed, the situation in certain areas actually began to worsen.

12.01.2026 (Monday)

During the second part of Sunday (11.01.26), I noticed slight improvement in my hearing. The sound regained some attack, became a bit brighter. I thought – this is it, the situation started to improve. But I was wrong.

By Monday morning the Sunday’s progress had gone. Moreover, things got worse. I had a strange feelings inside my ears — a physical feeling as if something were inserted in there, though they were empty.

The disappearance of Sunday’s progress, combined with these strange physical sensations, gave me enough reason to finally see a doctor.

At the doctors I noticed the following interesting thing: when the doctor was using a tuning fork (she was striking it against her knee and holding it to my ears), I stopped hearing it very quickly because it was too quiet. However, I believe she expected me to still hear it, as she continued to hold the handle against the bone behind my left ear, waiting for a reaction while I heard nothing at all.

Following that she decided to perform an audiometry test. The results shown that my hearing was still within the medical norm, even though there were already 15 dB drops in both ears, meaning you need to increase the sound from 0 dB (0 does not mean muted in this case, it means some sound at standard medical volume level, as I understand) to 15 dB so I can hear. The test was standard with measurements up to 8 kHz only. I knew from previous experience that I could easily hear up to 15 – 16 kHz at low volumes. I had even conducted some of my own tests with sine waves in the past.

However, I didn’t have my previous audiometry results from Minsk with me, which shown 5 dB flat line for air conduction and 0 dB flat line for bone conduction. Without that baseline for comparison, the doctor simply told me to go home and wait for it to heal on its own.

13.01.2026 (Tuesday)

During the night of the 12th to the 13th, my condition worsened. I began hearing various high-pitched noises at different frequencies that kept me awake. They were loud and easy to hear, but not intense enough to keep me awake for a long time, so I eventually got tired and managed to fall asleep.

14.01.2026 (Wednesday)

During the night of the 13th to the 14th the sounds became so loud and piercing that it was impossible to sleep. They were practically drilling into my brain. I spent the night in a state of anxiety and stress, only managing to fall asleep toward morning.

When I described my symptoms to Gemini (AI), it warned me that I am in serious trouble and at risk of permanent hearing loss. It urged me to see a doctor immediately and insisted that I needed emergency treatment, specifically steroids.

In the morning I was lucky to reserve another appointment the same day. There were no slots originally, but in 30 mins or so woman from the call center or reception called me back and told me she found the empty slot at 13:00

In addition, about one hour before the visit, I was able to get my previous audiometry (before the trauma) from Minsk. This was crucial, as it allowed the doctor to see my actual baseline.

This time, I was prescribed a treatment plan:

  1. Metypred (Steroids), 8 mg per day. I had to take it once a day in the morning for a week. On that first day, I took them as soon as I got home, between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. I should mention that I rarely take medication except vitamins — years can go by between doses. But these tablets are excellent; they are even prescribed for severe injuries, like spinal cord trauma. They provide a rapid recovery boost for cells (allowing some who couldn’t walk to start walking again, even if poorly). However, it’s crucial to start taking them as soon as possible after the incident.
  2. Betaserc, twice a day (morning and afternoon) for 60 days.
  3. Neurovit, twice a day (morning and evening) for 50 days.
  4. Nasonex (Nasal spray), twice a day, morning and evening, for 3 weeks.

The doctor also noted that while I wasn’t exactly early, it wasn’t too late either. He felt there was a good chance for recovery and scheduled a follow-up for two months later.

Prescrpiption to recover from acoustic trauma

After I came back home, and got the first portion of steroids, I wrote to Gemini again. He suggested me to ask the doctor, thinking I was still in the clinic, if they have an HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) chamber. It is a special medical device (there are also relaxation ones in SPA centers) which increases atmospheric pressure to deliver oxygen to cells more effectively. And the damaged cells need exactly that to survive. Again, the HBOT have to be medical, with the high pressure: 2.8 - 3.2 ATA.

I told AI that I am not in the hospital, and once again, it strongly sugggested that I had to find it, if I wanted to heal my hearing. Just to be clear, there are not so many such chambers as I understood. However, it so happened that I was able to find it and get the first procedure the same day. The first center I called was able to got me doctors appointment only on Friday, but the second was able to had me in 30 mins.

In addition I want to add that AI considered oxygen therapy as crucial. When I told it, after the first call, that I will get to the doctor only on Friday and don’t know when I will get the first procedure, it suggested me to find and use “wellness”/SPA HBOT chamber with the lower pressure instead of medical, because my ears needed oxygen as soon as possible, every hour counted.

My understanding of the situation was this: my damaged cells were dying without oxygen due to swelling in the ears that occurs after an acoustic trauma, which itself doesn’t allow the cells to get the oxygen. It was very important to let them breathe as soon as possible: the first portion of oxygen doesn’t restore your cells completely, but it stops them from dying.

In a way, if you apply this example to a person as a whole, someone who is injured and would die without the support of doctors, equipment, and a hospital, receives that support and transitions from a dying state to being a ‘critical but stable’ patient. And what is a ‘critical but stable’ patient? It means a gradual, albeit slow, recovery instead of death.

That is why, I believe it was suggested by AI, that it is better to get some oxygen from non-medical “wellness” bot with low pressure (e.g. 1.5 ATA) right now, than wait for medical one and loose your time.

Overall, I was prescribed 10 procedures in HBOT, each for 60 mins.

The first procedure was at 2.0 ATA, while I was prescribed 2.8 ATA. The thing is, you cannot have 2.8 ATA right away, you need to be trained. However, that 2.0 ATA which I luckly got the same day has stopped degradation of my cells and started the healing process.

Gemini also noted that Metypred reaches peak activity about two hours after ingestion, so everytime I took the steroids approx. 2 hours before the session, as was suggested.

Regarding the effect after the first procedure: something started to change after 2 hours after I left the clinic. I had different kind of ringings in my ears, but they became softer. 15.01.2026 (Thursday) – 24.01.2026 (next week Saturday)

My second HBOT session was at 2.2 ATA, the third at 2.5 ATA, and the final seven procedures were at the prescribed maximum of 2.8 ATA. I had them everyday except Sunday (18.01.26), the clinic is simply closed on Sundays.

I would say the first three or four procedures yielded the most significant results. I won’t go into every detail of how things shifted, but overall, different frequency ranges became hyper-sensitized on different days. For example, while shopping, I could hear the grit and sand under the wheels of other people’s carts so loudly and clearly it felt as if my ear were pressed right against the wheel. At the same time, human voices sounded flat and unnatural.

Another strange effect was the reaction to white noise: sounds of fans, the hissing of the radiator in the room and the fluttering of birds in an Instagram reel produced some strange low pitched ringing. After turning off the noise, the ringing stopped as well.

At one point, I performed a sine sweep test at low volume to assess my progress. Between 6 kHz and 8 kHz, I experienced a phenomenon where a single frequency (one note) sounded like multiple notes playing simultaneously. It was as if you pressed a single key on a piano, but it sounded like a dissonant chord. In addition, at some frequencies the center was jittering a bit, not significantly, but it was not solid.

I don’t recommend you to do the test, it is just I didn’t know it is better to wait, and when you are worrying you want to know how your recovery is going on. However, Gemini gave me a great analogy: it said that performing such a test is like trying to jump on a leg you broke just a week ago.

Current situation (03.02.26)

Below you can find two audiometries.

The first one serves as my baseline. I did it in Minsk before the trauma. The medical center where it was taken sent a photo of it to me, though I still have the original paper document. It shows 5 dB flat line for air conduction and 0 dB flat line for bone conduction up to 12.5 kHz. The 12.5 kHz entry, dot and a cross on the graphs were added by a hand of the doctor.

And here is the result approximately 3.5 weeks after the trauma (03.02.26):

It exactly reflects how I hear now (08.02.26), after partial recovery:

  1. Lower Overall Volume: There is a +5 dB shift in bone conduction.
  2. Loss of “Body”: Before this test, I described my hearing as sounding like small, thin speakers — especially when compared to the large, full-bodied sound of the Radiotehnika S-90 I grew up with. The audiogram confirms this: there is a +10 dB drop at frequencies below 1 kHz, a +15 dB drop in the left ear at 125 Hz, and a +10 dB dip in both ears at 4 kHz. Even though I have a drop, high frequencies after partial recovery become brighter than before but bass on some tracks is almost gone. I noticed, that on some tracks where I had enough of it before the trauma, it became nearly unnoticable after it. One time I literally thought there is no bass, it should start later, but no – if I listen very carefully I can barely hear it on that track, while on other tracks situation is a bit better. And this is in Sennheiser Momentum 2 – closed ANCs with some bass boost.

Currently I periodically hear morse-code-like ringings in my ears. But they come and go. I am not sure there is a specific time for them to appear, but most of the time it happens after I wake up, not necessarily in the morning, but even after a short nap.

Despite all that, I can still feel emotions through music. I would estimate my current level of recovery at 80% - 90% of the pre-trauma level.

Also, I am still on medication: Betaserc and Neurovit. So there is hope, that there is still some potential to improve.

It appears that I am not the only one who faced the issue with the Hugo 2. My own experience — two separate incidents — along with at least two other cases I found documented online, made me write this article. If it was only me, most likely I would contact Chord Electronics support only. However, it seems this is not a one-off event and may point to a serious engineering flaw.

In my opinion, all audio devices (not only high-end) must be designed with a “fail-safe” philosophy. Even if a component fails or a software bug occurs, it should never compromise the physical safety of the user. In such cases, the device should simply shut down or cut the output entirely, rather than ramping the volume to dangerous levels. An audio device should be built to protect its owner’s health above all else.

In this particular case, another way can be to create some physical switches, which depending on the headphones, doesn’t allow to increase the volume more than some limit. At the same time, there was a limiter – the volume knob. It’s just failed.

It is still in working condition. However, given the two incidents described above, I am 100% sure that it will “fire” again at some point. I believe that to prove this bug you just need to create sort of a QA stand and simply wait. Most probably there will be no need to disassemble it in order to figure out why it glitches.

I am not going to sell the device or get rid of it in any other way. No plans to use it, but will try to keep in working condition. Don’t think anything can happen with it, but there is a risk that the internal battery will die at some point, just because of time.
